Is Amazon DSP Worth It for a Small Brand?

The short answer

Amazon DSP is worth it once your sponsored ads are profitable and you want reach beyond people already searching for you. If search ads are still unprofitable, or the listing isn't converting, fix those first. DSP adds reach, not a cure for a weak listing.

The short answer: it depends on what you need next

Amazon DSP is programmatic display, video and streaming advertising bought per thousand impressions (CPM). Sponsored ads are bought per click, and they reach people who are already searching. That difference decides whether DSP is worth it for you.

If your goal is to win the shopper who is searching for your product today, sponsored ads usually do that job. If your goal is to reach shoppers who haven't searched yet, to bring back people who viewed your product, or to put a brand in front of new audiences on Amazon and beyond, DSP is the tool built for it.

For a small brand the honest sequence is: sponsored ads first, DSP second. DSP is worth it when the first step is working and you have run out of easy search growth.

A five-question test before you spend a dollar

Answer these honestly. Three or more yeses means DSP is worth a proper test.

  • Are your sponsored ads profitable? If not, adding another channel multiplies the problem.
  • Does your listing convert? Images, price and reviews matter even more when you are paying to bring in colder traffic.
  • Do you have stock depth? Reach that sells out your best ASIN wastes the budget.
  • Do you know your break-even? You need the number before you can judge any result.
  • Can you wait for the answer? Upper-funnel ads often show their value over weeks, not days, and last-click reports undercount them.

If you answered no to the first two, the answer for now is not yet. That is a perfectly good result, and it saves money.

What a real portfolio looks like

Numbers help more than adjectives here. Across 30 advertisers that reMKTR ran in July 2026, the portfolio delivered a 6.04x return on ad spend, measured across the whole book rather than cherry-picked from the best line item. It ran 78.4 million impressions at a $4.00 CPM and a blended $1.42 cost per click.

Blended cost per acquisition was $5.49 across 57,137 attributed purchases, and 20.1% of those purchases came from shoppers new to the brand.

Two cautions. First, this is one mixed portfolio in one month, not a promise about your account. Second, a $4.00 CPM means $4,000 buys 1,000,000 impressions, so a small test budget buys a limited amount of data. Plan the test so it can actually answer your question.

How to work out whether it paid off

Start with your break-even. Example: a $40 product with $14 left per order after product cost and fees. That is 35% of the price, so a 35% ACoS is break-even before any other costs. The $14 is an illustration, not a benchmark.

Then judge DSP differently from search. Last-click reporting gives credit to whichever ad ran last, which is often a sponsored search ad that DSP helped set up. That makes DSP look weaker than it is, and it can also hide a campaign that added nothing.

  • Track new-to-brand purchases, not only ROAS.
  • Compare total sales and total ad cost for the whole account before and after, not only the DSP dashboard.
  • Ask whoever runs the campaign how the test is designed, who computes the result, and whether that is written into the agreement. This is a fair question for any vendor, including us.

Self-service, managed service, or wait

There are three realistic paths for a small brand.

  • Wait and strengthen sponsored ads. Best when search is not yet profitable or the budget is small. Nothing is wasted by doing this first.
  • Self-service DSP. Best if you have someone with time to learn audiences, creative and reporting, and can accept a learning period.
  • DSP run as a service. Best when you want the setup, optimisation and measurement handled. reMKTR does this on its own Amazon DSP accounts rather than reselling access, and charges as a percentage of ad spend. Amazon also runs its own managed service with its own minimum, so check Amazon's advertising pages for the current figure.

If sponsored ads are your whole plan right now, you probably don't need us yet. reMKTR is there for when DSP becomes the real question. reMKTR is part of the Full Circle group, which has $500M+ in managed Amazon revenue across 100+ brands.

Which one you should actually pick

Sponsored ads suit brands still finding what converts, and they are the right first move for most small brands. Amazon DSP suits brands with profitable search, a converting listing and a need for new reach, if they measure it beyond last-click. When that is you, reMKTR can run it for you.

What to do with this

Shortlist on the job, not the feature grid. Pull your search-term report for the last 90 days and total the spend against terms that produced no orders — 48.5% across the 47 brands above. Then ask each vendor on your list what they would do about it in week one, and see who answers with a process rather than a screenshot.

Common questions

Is Amazon DSP worth it for a small brand?

Yes, once your sponsored ads are profitable and your listing converts, and you want reach beyond people already searching. If either of those is not true yet, fix them first.

Do I need to sell on Amazon to use Amazon DSP?

No. DSP can reach audiences on Amazon and on third-party sites even if you don't sell on Amazon. Brands that do sell there can also send shoppers to their product pages and use Amazon's shopping signals.

How long does it take to know if DSP is working?

Plan for weeks, not days. Upper-funnel ads often influence a purchase that a later search ad gets credit for, so judge the test on total account sales and new-to-brand purchases as well as the DSP dashboard.

Should I use DSP or sponsored ads first?

Sponsored ads first. They reach shoppers who are already looking and they are simple to set up. Add DSP when search growth flattens and you want to reach new audiences.

What results can I expect from Amazon DSP?

Nobody can promise a result. For context, across 30 advertisers in July 2026, reMKTR's portfolio returned 6.04x on ad spend with a $5.49 blended cost per acquisition. Your own account will differ, so run a measured test.
