Amazon Retargeting Ads: How to Retarget Shoppers Who Viewed Your Product
To retarget Amazon shoppers who viewed your product, use Sponsored Display with the views remarketing audience, which is self-serve and billed per click. For wider reach, including off-Amazon sites and streaming, use Amazon DSP audiences built from product page views, usually run as a managed service.
What this looks like across the book we manage
What Amazon Retargeting Actually Is
Retargeting means showing an ad to someone who already looked at your product but did not buy. On Amazon there are two routes, and they work differently.
- Sponsored Display is the self-serve route. You pick an audience of shoppers who viewed your product detail pages (or similar products), set a budget and a bid, and Amazon shows your ad on product pages, in search results and on some sites and apps outside Amazon. You pay per click, or per thousand viewable impressions if you choose that option.
- Amazon DSP is the programmatic route. You build audiences from the same kind of shopper behavior, then buy display, video and streaming TV placements on a CPM basis. It reaches more surfaces and gives more control over frequency and creative, and it is normally run as a managed service.
Both depend on Amazon's own shopper signals, so you do not need a pixel on your site to retarget a product page view on Amazon itself. The shopper does not need to have clicked anything: a view is enough.
How to Set Up Views Remarketing in Sponsored Display
Sponsored Display is the quickest way to start. It is open to registered brands in Seller Central and to vendors. Steps:
- Create a Sponsored Display campaign in the Amazon Ads console and choose the products you want to advertise.
- Choose the audience. Pick the views remarketing option so the ad goes to shoppers who viewed your detail pages but did not buy. Some setups also offer a similar-products view audience; treat that as a separate test, not the same thing.
- Set the lookback window. This is how far back a view still counts. A shorter window targets people who are still shopping; a longer one suits products people buy rarely.
- Set a bid and budget. Start small and let the audience prove itself before raising the budget.
- Add a headline and creative that gives a reason to return: a price, a benefit, a review count you can stand behind, not a repeat of the listing.
Check the console for the exact audience names and options, because Amazon renames and reorganizes them from time to time.
When to Use Amazon DSP Instead
Sponsored Display covers the simple case. Amazon DSP earns a look when you want to do more than follow one product viewer around.
- Reach beyond one placement. DSP can buy display, video and streaming TV on Amazon and on third-party sites, and you decide which supply sources to include.
- Audience layering. You can combine product page viewers with other signals, or exclude people who already bought, so you are not paying to show an ad to a customer.
- Frequency control. Without a cap, a small audience can see the same ad many times a week. DSP lets you set the limit.
- Creative and sequencing. You can show a different message to a viewer on day 3 than on day 20.
The trade-off is complexity and cost of entry. Amazon's own advertising page says the managed-service route with an Amazon Ads account executive normally requires a minimum investment of $50,000, which is why most advertisers start on Sponsored Display. reMKTR runs Amazon DSP as a managed service on its own advertiser accounts, so a smaller brand can use DSP without staffing it in house. What Retargeting Looks Like in a Real Book of Accounts
Retargeting audiences are small and warm, so their results usually look better on paper than the rest of a plan. Treat that with care. Across 30 advertisers in July 2026, the reMKTR portfolio delivered a 6.04x return on ad spend, with 78.4 million impressions at a $4.00 CPM and a blended $1.42 cost per click. Blended cost per acquisition was $5.49 across 57,137 attributed purchases, and 20.1% of those purchases came from shoppers new to the brand.
That last figure is the point for retargeting. By definition, a shopper who viewed your product has already met your brand, so retargeting alone cannot produce new-to-brand sales. A plan that only retargets will look efficient and stop growing. Those numbers are a mixed portfolio over one month, not a promise about your account.
How to Tell Whether Retargeting Is Adding Sales
The risk with retargeting is credit, not delivery. Many people who viewed your product would have come back and bought anyway, and last-click reporting gives the ad the sale either way.
- Exclude recent buyers so spend goes only to people who have not purchased.
- Run a holdout. Keep part of the audience out of the campaign for a few weeks and compare their purchase rate with the exposed group. The gap is what the ad added.
- Watch your sponsored ads. If branded search sales rise while Sponsored Display sales rise, check that the same purchase is not being counted twice. In Amazon Marketing Cloud, DSP and sponsored ads can be reconciled together.
- Cap frequency and read the report weekly for the first month.
If a vendor reports retargeting results, ask who designed the test and whether it is written into the scope of work. That question is fair for any provider, including us.
Who Each Route Suits
If you are a brand-registered seller with a modest budget and want to start this week, Sponsored Display views remarketing is the right place to begin. It is self-serve, has no required minimum, and you can learn from your own data before committing more.
If you already run Sponsored Products well, want reach beyond Amazon's own pages, or want audience, frequency and creative control, Amazon DSP is the next step. reMKTR is built for that stage and is part of the Full Circle group, which has $500M+ in managed Amazon revenue across 100+ brands. If you are earlier than that, fix the listing and the search term report first; retargeting amplifies a page that converts and wastes money on one that does not.

Which one you should actually pick
Start with Sponsored Display views remarketing: it is self-serve, billed per click and fast to test. Move to Amazon DSP when you want reach beyond Amazon, frequency control and audience layering, and when you can measure lift with a holdout. reMKTR runs Amazon DSP as a service for brands at that stage.
Shortlist on the job, not the feature grid. Pull your search-term report for the last 90 days and total the spend against terms that produced no orders — 48.5% across the 47 brands above. Then ask each vendor on your list what they would do about it in week one, and see who answers with a process rather than a screenshot.
Common questions
How do I retarget Amazon shoppers who viewed my product?
Create a Sponsored Display campaign and choose the views remarketing audience, which targets shoppers who viewed your product detail pages but did not buy. Set a lookback window, a bid and a budget. For reach beyond that, use Amazon DSP audiences.
Do I need a pixel to retarget on Amazon?
Not to retarget people who viewed your product on Amazon. Amazon already holds that signal. A pixel or tag matters when you want to retarget visitors to your own website.
Is Sponsored Display or Amazon DSP better for retargeting?
Sponsored Display is better to start: self-serve, billed per click, no minimum. Amazon DSP is better when you want reach across more surfaces, frequency caps and layered audiences, and you can measure the result.
Will retargeting bring in new customers?
Not by itself. Everyone in a views audience has already seen your product. For new-to-brand sales you need prospecting audiences alongside retargeting.
How do I know retargeting ads are worth the money?
Exclude recent buyers, then run a holdout where part of the audience does not see the ad and compare purchase rates. Last-click reporting alone cannot show what the ad added.
